Stress Tip: Reaching Out - Date : 2008-07-05

Too many of us try to deal with stress by withdrawing into ourselves and blocking out the world. But decades of research – including the study just described - have shown that people who are connected to others, as opposed to being isolated or rejected, deal better with stress and are even physically healthier. In fact, studies have shown that a lack of social support and integration is actually a higher risk factor for getting sick than smoking! So, if you feel stressed today, reach out to another, whether it’s calling up a friend, talking to a family member, or just chatting with somebody on the bus about the weather! If you do not have a chance to actually talk to someone, just imagine having a conversation with a friend – even that can help us feel less stressed.
